July 12, 1999 This encyclopedia provides information about corporate governance which is a field in economics that investigates how corporations can be made more efficient by the use of institutional structures such as contracts, organizational designs and legislation. This is often limited to the question of shareholder value i.e. how the corporate owners can motivate or secure that the corporate managers will deliver a competitive rate of return. So far the encyclopedia is solely produced and expanded by Henrik Mathiesen who is a Ph.D. candidate in Denmark at Copenhagen Business School, The Department of International Economics and Management. For the time being the purpose of the web site is largely experimental. The idea is to explore whether the flexible nature of the internet media can be used to provide information on corporate governance in a way that can support the more traditional means of communication such as research papers and academic books. This is attempted in several ways: 1) By ordering the hierarchy of the web pages so that the 'top-level pages' are introductory to the field of corporate governance and that the different topics are treated in a more advanced fashion as one moves down the the hierarchy of web pages. 2) By linking words and phrases of corporate governance to relevant places that clarify their meaning. 3) By not charging any fees for viewing the encyclopedia although all of its content is protected by copyrights. If the concept of this encyclopedia turns out to be a success among the students of corporate governance the idea is to create a web-community with a hierarchy of editors maintaining different parts of the site. In this way it would be possible to enhance both the quality and the extent of the site. If you have any comments or ideas about how to improve this site please do not hesitate to contact me at henrik@mathiesen.biz .
Best regards H. Mathiesen
